Ravenswood Chicago IL Real Estate
The small rural village of Ravenswood was annexed by Chicago in 1889. Today the Ravenswood community consists of Ravenswood Gardens, Budlong Woods, Bowmanville, Ravenswood Manor and parts of Lincoln Square and is known for its tree-lined streets and parks. Ravenswood most notable resident was Poet Carl Sandburg.
Ravenswood has its own rapid-transit system connecting to the downtown Loop. Lincoln Square is the commercial hub of the area surrounded by residentially zoned streets. It is home to the Old Town School of Folk Music, a popular local entertainment venue and music school. Also located in Ravenswood is the Sulzer Regional Library, one of two regional libraries in Chicago.
The area’s small shops and outdoor cafés appeal to families and young professionals. The annual Apple Fest and Farmers Market attract visitors every summer.
Welles Park is a lovely public park with playing fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and a playground. Its field house has an indoor pool and several gyms. It was on these basketball courts that Abe Saperstein, who later became the founder of the Harlem Globetrotters, played as a kid.
Ravenswood is one of Chicago's first planned neighborhoods with Victorian and Prairie School homes, brick row houses and extra-wide lots. Once an ‘up and coming’ neighborhood, the affordable single-family homes, multi-family units and condominiums are wildly popular today with resident 'rehabbers.' The East Ravenswood Historic District is known for its lovely architectural homes and ever-growing popularity.
