River West is a small neighborhood within West Town gracing the banks of the Chicago River’s South Branch. It lies east of the Kennedy Expressway and is bordered by Division, Grand, and the Kennedy Expressway (Routes 90/94), it rubs elbows with trendy Wicker Park and artistic River North and is bisected by the elevated Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
You can find many family owned restaurants, as well as fine dining and cafes, art galleries, bakeries, flower and produce stands, St. John Cantius church, and the Chicago Tribune’s Freedom Center Printing Facility.
Another claim to fame is the United Center stadium, home of the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks and a venue for some of the world’s most popular musicians and entertainers. Television diva Oprah Winfrey chose River West as the home for her Harpo Studios.
River West is considered a less expensive option to River North. Housing consists of several large loft buildings which have been converted into residential use and several new townhome developments. River West is being rediscovered by a new generation of Chicagoans.
